Use a countdown timer to study with intention. Set a duration, start the clock, and stay focused until the session ends.
Structuring your study blocks helps build long-term focus. Here are three standard methods:
Study countdown
The **25/5 method** (Pomodoro Technique) suggests focusing for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break. This prevents mental fatigue. For longer study blocks, the **50/10 method** works best: focus intensely for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break to stretch, drink water, or walk.
Before hitting the start button on your study timer: 1. Put your phone in another room or turn on "Do Not Disturb" mode. 2. Clear your desk, leaving only materials for the current study block. 3. Close unrelated browser tabs to avoid multitasking.
Most studies suggest that human attention peaks between 40 to 50 minutes. Studying for longer than 90 minutes without a short break usually leads to a steep decline in retention and focus.
Do something offline. Stretch, walk around, drink water, or do a breathing exercise. Avoid checking social media, as it creates "cognitive switching costs" and makes it harder to refocus.
A countdown timer is better because it creates a clear boundary. Knowing there is a set end-time helps you resist distractions, while a stopwatch can make study sessions feel indefinite and tiring.
Use standard 25-minute study intervals with built-in break controls.
